Triple-Senpai, you only claim every anime besides anything from Studio Ghibli is shit. I challenge you to watch the whole thing of Shingeki no Kyojin or Steins;Gate.
no, thanks.
i dont claim that its shit (well, from the pov of cultural value it is actually shit same as most movies/series, but thats not the point). i just personally dislike it, and i dont see any sense in forcing myself to watch smthng i cant enjoy.
Attack on Titan is not something I'd recommend to people because while it does avoid a ton of anime cliches, it's still fucking awful.
Sword Art Online has some good points but is generally really shit.
You're gonna have to explain why it's awful, Sven guy. My biggest complaint about it is that it's currently unfinished as an anime and the art style is a little... thick. The black lines are really bold.
1) Pacing is terrible
2) Titans are terrible villains and they look retarded too, the way they fight them reminds me of minecraft mobs
3) Too much pseudo intellectual crap
4) Retarded monologues for 6 year olds, that state the same, extremely obvious shit over and over again
5) Most characters have unrealistically polarized traits making them caricatures, and I am not talking just about side characters
6) The story arc presented in the first 25 episodes (season 1) of this simply gets fucking boring at some point and most of it could fit into 12 episodes and not lose any value whatsoever
7) The only thing that makes the plot possible is that some humans who are titan shifters have some mindless retarded and unrealistic agenda (that's still unknown, whether in manga or anime) and are hell bent on destroying all humanity for some fucking reason, it makes no sense whatsoever and feels like a parody
8) I have to repeat: the incessant pseudointelectualism/monologues that try to sound smart but appear to be written by a 3rd grader who thinks he's good at writing, there are multiple points repeated in this rant, and that should give you an overall idea of how annoyed I was with them
I really look for more in an anime, so shit like Attack on Titan just has no redeeming qualities for me, because I can just play the opening themes on youtube (they're fucking awesome). Many complain about the art style, but that's the least of my worries, the art style's actually pretty fine compared to other lacking areas, like story/character development, the script/dialogues, etc.
If you're looking for "smart" animes, maybe try underground detective ones, they usually have clever characters. I thought Death Note was pretty amazing when it came to " out thinking someone. "
I wouldn't have a good suggestion because that's not what I look for in an anime, but I do have a problem when people try to make something pseudointellectual like Death Note or "wisdom" in Attack on Titan because it's just so fucking sad and cringe-inducing. Otherwise, I can't think of any anime I'd call largely intellectual, that I've truly enjoyed.
It's funny you say Death Note, because that anime is in no way intellectual, it just pretends to be - you learn nothing from it unless you're retarded and can't grasp some things on your own, and the "outthinking" war between Light and L/N is just fucking sad, because it's in no way natural, they are all kind of omniscient, they aren't "outthinking" each other as much as whoever wrote the script just copy/pasted what and how they all think. Plus it goes downhill once L dies, since he was the best character on the show. It's just not smart if the characters are artificially omniscient, rofl.
When I say intellectual I mean truly satisfying on an intellectual level, exceedingly thought provoking, etc, so far I don't really remember watching an anime that rubs me that way, but I've watched many failed attempts at it. And yes, Death Note definitely goes downhill once L gets killed in the pu$$iest way possible.
Yeah i have to agree that Shinsekai Yori is really good.
Code Geass is my all time favorite, though. To be honest, i want to get a pin up of C.C. on my arm, lmao

Pacing is a common problem, it picks up in the second half though.
This is isn't a common opinion.
I didn't think there was psuedo-intellectual crap in AoT, this isn't Death note or Code Geass. If there is, it isn't supposed to be a strong point anyway.
Give me some quotes of retarded monologue, because that's also a fairly uncommon issue
It really can't fit into 12 episodes. A lot of time that isn't spent fighting titans has to do with politics and character development. The show can't be constant fighting.
Even strict anime critics don't come up with this shit, with maybe the exception of pacing and character problems. I honestly believe you're hating on it just to hate on it.
@bran damj If you're looking for an actually intellectual anime which isn't afraid of making you piece the story and its messages by yourself, watch Serial Experiments Lain. Word of warning, the anime is extremely cryptic and you may or may not completely grasp the story on your first watch. As far as intellectual goes, Lain is by far one of the most accomplished in every sense of the word, one of the best that I've watched as well. It's extremely well done as far as how the plot predicted a modern civilization with the emergence of the internet, taking into account that the anime was made back in 1998.
Sven guy, no matter how much you try, you won't find something actually intellectually satisfying in most animes. Most of the ones you mentioned are targeted towards young teenagers. Blood, gore, stupidly huge tits and all, because in japan they don't find it troubling to show all that to very young people.
And what they consider to be intellectual often overlaps with mind-fucking confusing, so if you actually want something mildly intellectual or simply cool for a westerner but still an anime, you should try series that were inspired by western shows or created by directors who have worked in western animation studios.
Nah, death note was really good, only people who hate it are people who hate popular animes. The OST was OP, has amazing songs, and some are fun on guitar, and the english dub was pretty good too, heck the story was very well made, and the manga is great too. But whatever ever you say, you do have the "best taste in the world. "
