Idk I never had a set in stone internet handle. In my school days cus my name is Mark some girls would sometimes call me marky mark like Mark whalberg so my aol name was markemark but as I got older it started to sound juvenile but by that time I wasn't on anything else that had avatar names. I played wow but your name was for each character and forums usually used those too. For steam I used just plain Mark for a while but now I usually try to reference something I find cool like older games or entertainment I enjoy. I don't have a particular attachment to any avatar name though I did name my dog Thor so I use variants of that for a bunch of forums.
Like I'll bet a ton of Dota players don't make the connection between my avatar and name but if they do and mention it to me it's awesome like a nod to an old school gamer. Like I saw a guy who was crag hack and had the homm3 icon for his avatar and it was awesome. Stuff that isn't as main stream as like Mario or Zelda but just cool vintage games.
@Deez nuts
it looks familiar only if you actually read it; However, I usually just look through my friendlist, cz there are too many people online usually, and it's pretty easy to recognize ppl basing on the structure of their nicknames or profile pics.
its not hard to recognize Badgersan as Havoc Badger, kappa

in my opnion the name has to be something particular that you are attached to or that people recognize you for
