Thanks for the heads up, Havoc. I'm thinking of getting a new pc soon and that'd surely come in handy

If I had to recommend a decent performing budget system I would go for http://pcpartpicker.com/p/mTkwf7

      Soultrap

Make sure your VGA card comes with Linux drivers.

        Dire Wolf

There's no point in buying an aftermarket cooler, especially if you aren't going to oc. I don't know if overclocking even generates more heat anyway, but that's an easy way to save money by going stock.

Get 8gb of ram but make sure you mobo has space to upgrade. Your cpu should be adequate for 5, 6, 7 years or more. Your ram will not be so make sure you have expansion slots. IE get a full ATX mobo, not a mini.

Other than that get the features you want, like usb slots, sata whatevers, but they're just features. You probably don't need to sli so don't pay for what you don't need.

GPU, don't buy a $300 card unless you are playing higher resolutions than 1920x1080. There's just no point, you will ~60 fps on pretty much every game maxed with a $200 card (like a gtx 770 or equivalent) vs the $300 970, and the few that you won't like maybe witcher 3 or inquisition with maxed anti aliasing, just turn the shadows down and AA down slightly and you won't notice unless you have side by side screenshots. With a 970 vs a 770 on 1920x1080 resolution you are paying 50% more for like a 15-20% increase in fps and both will be 60+ on most games with max settings, not worth it.

Also with a 970 500w psu might not be aqaquate. It says under full load it draws quite a bit. Obviously quality and the rails matter a lot when calculating total power required, it's not just wattage, but I'd go with a 600w to be safe.
