edit: I'm not advocating you should pick these heroes in pubs, I'm saying IF you pick these heroes this is arguably the best way to play them if you want a chance to win against non-brain deads.
I am not a sniper player but i think it's a good mid currently, you 'just' need good ward to cover you and you are fine most of the time if you are careful about positionning.
Sniper is a "go mid to farm" hero. You can't really kill the other mid unless they're retarded and he has no way of clearing large waves easily. This puts him at a lower tier than heroes like SF/Storm, who also rely on farm but can do it much more quickly.
u cant reall go mid to farm in low level pubs ur better off going with something like lion or lina getting level 6 going into safelane claiming kill with ur ulti
going back to lane to farm getting ur blink killing again with ulti and rinse and repeat
@battalia you can solo kill alot of heroes as sniper (sub 5.5k) snipers new q is amazing on both roaming supports and escapeless mids like storm (< lvl6) and sf
Sniper is super pubstomp if they just either let you farm up your cores or throw themselves at you. (Which happens like 90% of the time because everyone is a retard down here)
going radiant mid for sniper is so cool u can stack the hard camp with shrap and the medium with normal attack without losing any creeps
then clear them with 2-3 charges
I find that if you go ring of Aquila, treads, Midas (love you baby), and blink dagger (or shadow blade) you have decent damage mid game, some escape, and great potential late game. He stomps hard if against a non-mobile line-up or against teams that don't gank him.
Edit: so I don't think MOM is essential on him.
idk why u rarely see players below 6k going dagger on troll/jugg. i see it about ~30% times on troll, and approximately same share of juggernauts go for either dagger or sb. My bracket is ~5k, and i consider both drow and sniper to be VERY bad counters jugger. With troll they work better, but not much. Dotabuff statistics is based on all the games, including 1-3kk ones, so the relationship is biased and not always working for particular skill brackets.
anyways, thats only my opinion, i may be wrong.
I like to play them safelane but you need a good support to protect you and you need your mid to rotate if enemy team is insistent on ganking. Turn those ganks into counter kills. Sniper and drow are both kind of like quaterbacks though, they need an entire offensive line to keep them upright. You need the right team around them.

So according to dotabuff these heroes are actually pretty good against jugg/troll, mainly due to the OP heroes having difficulty of closing in on these long range glass cannons (I've rarely seen any sub 6k player buy blink on troll/jugg so I wouldn't worry about that possibility).
I've tried offlane sniper with mixed success, it seems if my team is ahead we can just 5 man and win fights. If we're behind these heroes are really trash and get killed in 2 seconds. On top of that, there are games where you simply won't get much farm at all because the enemy supports are being assholes and zoning you out.
Going safelane is out of the question because you're most likely going to get jumped on by bat/magnus/clock/whatever, and then nobody on ur team will have the gold/net worth capable of carrying you because you soaked up the safelane farm + jungle.
These heroes also lose to typical mids like zeus/lina/qop (unless you greatly outskill enemy mid) so...this leaves 1 option left: jungling.
With the cliff jungling trick by cutting down trees with QB and getting 2 slippers -> wraith band you will farm more slowly but will be more likely protected from enemy threats.
2 wraith/treads/MoM seems like the typical item progression, followed by yasha (sny/manta) then bkb. I've tried non-MoM builds and your DPS is just way too low to make an impact mid-game - kill or be killed.
Blink dagger/shadow blade can be bought if you greatly fear being jumped on fights but that depends upon your own awareness/reaction time.
