dominator of course. It also gives you dominate,which is immensely useful for these functions:
1. Grab a range creep/nc to stack camp/ancient (up to your ability to clear)
2. Use the grabbed nc as scout or free ward
3. At later parts, grab an alpha wolf for easy damage increase/rosh.
Dominator is much better for some obvious reasons such as upgrade potential, stacking ancients or using a creep, gives more dmg than vlads for a while cus vlads is only 16% of base dmg, so you need agi items or high level before vlads comes out ahead.
But one really overlooked reason is ability to lifesteal on ranged attacks. At least for me this is huge. Because it means you can pop into ranged form to finish off runners in any team fight and not suddenly die cus you aren't regenerating hp. It means you can withstand harass in a lane and go ranged to regen. Troll can be an extremely effective ranged hero as well and vlads does very little for a ranged hero.
Vladimir could be build too if your team has a 'higher' melee carry. But when you're core hero 99% out of the games you should get dominator.

Can't stress that enough - Vladimir's Offering is really bad on troll, and the lifesteal isn't that great. If you have a Wraith King on your team then you possibly might not even have to get lifesteal at all!
Get ring of aquila, not Vladimir's.
Vlads for me. The MP regen and armor aura from basi is too good to give up for pushing, at the same time i don't want to waste two slots holding basi and hotd especially when im holding many other item components for bkb, drum etc..
You could always buy hotd/satanic later on if you really need the lifesteal to sustain.
Zelda has spoken with his 1k knowledge. But really, it depends on game. If you are just solo farming, then you want HotD. If you are pushing towers as 4-5, you want Vlads.

Also whenever I get Satanic on Troll, theres rather few games where I actually find it useful. However, those game it has been useful it probably saved the game. (From 10hp to 100%)
Other times it've done nothing cause I've just not been in range to attack cause getting kited.

Power Treads Vlads Desolator Manta AC or something. I have yet to try it, but I don't think it's better than the original Phase Hotd SnY thingy in average games.

I would usually go for phase drums vlads bkb necro. Whirling axes makes it very easy to push the lane quickly all the way to the tower and that race car ms allows you to bail when there are tp rotations to def tower. I take necro over deso because i can deward and also not commit my own hero in the tower siege.
In short, play rat troll like lycan.
although with the hotd buff one could argue that the wolf/ogre would still offer more than a vlads in 4/5 man push

If you aren't going to build aquila on troll then I can see a much stronger argument for vlads but I go aquila like every single game. It gives you like half the drums stats for half the price. Drums is a very good item too, I just prefer other directions.
And if you're getting harassed in lane and need to go ranged form you can always sit with morbid mask and bassy for a bit and turn it into aquila later.
Edit: AM probably needed a bkb too in that game. One good stun from ck and a reality rift with all his illusions and AM's toast.

-damage is not the problem for troll
Why do you think you see people buying phase, sny, dagger on troll? Its because his damage is insane, you just want mobility, maybe a bit of bulk and sustain on the way, but you only really need damage items later on.
vlads/domi has been talked about a bit already, but its not too complex. Both are good items, vlads is better if you can end the game around ~30-40 minutes, especially if you are a lower core position that wants to push as 5 or have another melee core that would benefit from the item. Hotd is a little greedier and only really becomes a better choice when you extend into satanic, also takes up an extra slot (vlads slaps that regen from RoB into 1 slot).
Medallion theoretically is good for its cost effectiveness if you get to use early and often.
However, this implies that you will be spamming alot more of both ranged and melee whirling axes, battle trance as well as being in melee range for bash/whirling axe. In ranged form, Troll's dps is sub-optimal since you most likely won't have a stationary target and your backswing is average at best, meaning you have to compensate by chasing more or staying closer to melee range.
You would definitely have to get additional sustain on top of medallion in the form of a bottle or stick/wand. If you take medallion then you should taken up 3 slots, boots/med/bottle(and or wand/stick), 4 if you throw in a tp scroll. That leaves you with a limited number of slots, unless you can afford to straight up buy your next core item, it isn't worth it at all.
Consider the fact that troll's whirling axes is its primary farming/pushing tool, you can easily 6 slot without needing what bfury does for am. So, why buy medallion when you can 6 slot very quickly? You would just be wasting your gold and delaying item progression.
Dmg on troll is ok but definitely not that insane. Most engages are determined within the first few seconds. If you can't land that 1st hit 10% bash or deal enough dmg within the first few hits as a carry, then you are definitely going to get rekt.
Unless,
1. You have a farm advantage (which is plausible given troll's mobility and farming speed)
2. They have no lock-down
I would avoid buying S&Y and replace it with drums then go for a daedelus or another core item. Both S&Y and Dagger serve the pretty much same purpose, i don't see why you need both.
Phase, hotd/sny/bkb (order changes), satanic works a charm for me. Haven't tried sb recently but i would agree it's a good pickup.

I'm 21-9 going Shadow blade almost every game. Even those I have blink on, I had a shadow blade first and switched.
Guess Shadowblade is complete trash.
Vlad's is picked up in competitive for the Aura. I wouldn't rely on that sort of an organization unless you're playing stacked or like high MMR games. Probably the big reason for HotD is the +20 dmg with the lifesteal/armor/hp regen. It's almost a 2nd phase boots.
Also Shadow Blade Troll is terrific for pub games. Obviously Phase are the core boots, he needs some damage early on. Basi is great for the cost, Aquila isn't necessary per say; but it's decent enough if you're like in the fountain and have the gold handy to upgrade before heading into a fight/push. I'm going to start dicking around with a non-SnY build and instead go straight into a Skadi. SnY is good but when you consider costs and what it gives, it's not all that super-duper. I think Manta is legit on Troll as well, since he pushes pretty well. I just don't think SnY transitions strong enough into the late game. I'd rather have Yasha+OOV+Lothars than an SnY, in the mid-game.
I did a medallion vs a team with dk and dk melted early (rosh died much, much faster too). Unfortunately team fed dk top lane and we lost anyway. But I think I still prefer aquila over medallion, just a little cheaper, more mana regen.
