MMR is not a zero sum game. Refer to the calibration phase where thousands of MMR are added or removed to "the game" per user or when people simply make new accounts, which adds thousands of MMR to the game right off the bat.

The source which you took that info from: http://blog.dota2.com/2013/12/matchmaking/
Specifically states:

To give you a feel for the range of MMR, below are some MMRs corresponding to various percentiles.
5% 1100
10% 1500
25% 2000
50% 2250
75% 2731
90% 3200
95% 3900
99% 4100
Note that this distribution is from normal matchmaking. We don’t know yet what the distribution will be in ranked matchmaking, but we expect it to be different. The players who participate in ranked matchmaking will be more skilled, more experienced players. We anticipate that any given player will have different expectations and play the game differently in ranked matchmaking compared to normal matchmaking.
There is no way that 4.1k is the 99th percentile in ranked. My guess is that it's like 5.5k or something.
@androgynous
Yes, there is a way. What is 1% of 10000? It's 100. That's a lot of people. There's more than 5 million dota players. 1% of that is 50000. That's a lot of players. To put things in perspective, there are only a few hundred players with 5.5k MMR. Let's say there are 5000 even. That'd be the top .01%.
Going from leaderboards there are probably like 300 people in each region above 5k. Meaning 1% above 4k is very likely.
Do you really need to necro this thread, just for sake, of saying something totally useless?

I was wondering if the distribution can shift over time or if MMR is truly a sum zero game where the original values hold true:
5% 1100
10% 1500
25% 2000
50% 2250
75% 2731
90% 3200
95% 3900
99% 4100
According to this chart, anything around or above 3.9k is pretty solid (top 5%). that would mean these are some harsh boards (anything below 5k generally earning the badge of shit tier)
About me... personally I play the game for fun (been on for about 2 years) and have been bouncing between 3.6 and 3.9k since mmr came out. There are (by my perception) decent games played at this level. Then again maybe I'm just a stupid shit tier play who doesn't know better or who underperforms and doesn't realize where or how. if anyone wants to look at my games and give me feedback, i'm opening up myself up for suggestions and of course the brutal honesty that comes along with posting here.
