They want items so they can trade for better items and get more value because the dota economy is all they live for.
diretide was fun before item greed kicked in at least for me ^^
on the other hand frostivus was top notch garbage in my eyes -horrible balance + extremely boring xO
I have d2ware to tide me over for now for custom modes. I had only really started dota during the last DireTide, so I still preferred normal MM at the time. Now I really want it though.
I liked Diretide except when you had a lot of baddies. The stage 3 rosh fight could be horribly long or even impossible with clueless people.
Some people like dire tide, some people don't. What's the problem? Same thing back in WC3 with all the custom maps, not everyone enjoyed every map, and that wasn't a problem.

Yea I dont understand why people think they HAVE to play dota.........if your life so fucked up that no matter how much you hate dota there is nothing better in your life? When I get bored I go do something else I enjoy......

last year played several diretide games and thought it was so boring. (But the halloween and xmas themed regular maps were way cool). feel like watching my niece playing candy crash or something
this year surprised to see so many people hate valve for no diretide / late diretide.
