X draws much more attention than ping from my experience
Usually I find people react to ping as "pay attention", while for x, which has a more alerting sound, as "action needed immediately about where I pinged"
And if they aren't on board with your head, and you do not actually communicate in other words (like typing "b" in chat), they may very likely misinterpret your ping
I use ping to ask an action, i use X! to warn someone, it's always work for now, people trend to understand it this way too
i ping enemy smoke with x, normal ping on hero for go!
normal ping on ground for enemy obs here/enemy hero in fog
@OP, you're not wrong. Purely from the symbols, ping draws attention, and x has negative connotations. I ping an enemy to go on him/low health in teamfight, ping towers to attack/defend them, ping rs to take or contest. I don't have "I'm retreating" on my chat wheel so I click my hp/mana % and hope that they understand I'm backing unless I can get some regen. x for enemy smokes/ganks, although sometimes I just ping to draw attention to that part of the map.

unless you are a pirate, i believe everyone follow this ideia of !go and Xdontgo

i use ping ! for engaging and ping X for retreating or announcing a danger situation. but i see people dive into enemy after i use X and then after death they say why you ping and didnt help ... am i using the ping (Alt+clicking) right? is X used for attack?!
